Redefine Scaling – fix text frame scaling after Alternate Layout (Adobe InDesign)

The script automatically fixes the scaling of text frames and groups after using the Create Alternate Layout function in Adobe InDesign.

Problem it solves:

After creating an Alternate Layout, InDesign scales objects but saves the transformation as "object scaling" instead of embedding it into the actual dimensions. The result: font size displays as e.g. 19.52 pt (39.04) instead of the correct 39.04 pt. This causes errors during further editing.

What the script does

Processes all groups in the document — from outermost to most deeply nested, preserving the correct transformation order. Then resets the scaling of all text frames, skips locked objects and objects on locked layers. Displays a detailed report: how many groups and frames were processed and how many errors occurred.

When to use

Immediately after running Layout > Create Alternate Layout. When font sizes in the Character panel show a double value in parentheses.

Requirements

• Adobe InDesign CC 2020 or newer
• Document must be open before running the script

How to use

Open your document → run Create Alternate Layout → launch the script via Window > Utilities > Scripts. The script will execute automatically and display a summary.
